The Facial Skincare Product Guide Interview

By Interviewer at 07/16/07 15:45

Name of your website?

The Facial Skincare Product Guide

Your name?

George Brooks

Your Location (city, etc)

Gainesville, VA

When did you start your website and why?

In my work as an esthetician, I see so many clients who could have great skin if only they knew how to take care of it. Most people don't want to take the time to see an esthetician on a regular basis, so they head to the drugstore and buy a bunch of skincare products that they think might work. Often time, these products do more harm than good! So I set about writing the [404 Check: was link to http:/ / www. facial -skincare -product -guide. com, anchor: Facial Skincare Product Guide] in an effort to provide much needed information about skin care.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

We have two parts to our business - a brick and mortar location in Gainesville, VA and a skincare web site to serve the entire world. If you're nearby Gainesville, come on in for a Thai Massage session, or schedule a custom facial treatment. Or, if you're too far away and need help with [404 Check: was link to http:/ / www. facial -skincare -product -guide. com/ dark -circles -under -eyes. html, anchor: dark circles under your eyes] , for example, then just browse our skin care site.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Running the Web site(s) has been a joy. I've learned so much, but it is the learning curve that is the most difficult. Who ever thought that an esthetician and massage therapist would learn html!?

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Embracing the connections. People from all over the world use the "contact us" form on my skin care site. It is such a joy to be able to provide real advice to real people on such a grand scale.

What was your biggest mistake?

I think paying for links to my Web site was probably the biggest mistake I have made. After a while I realized that I had so much great content on my skin care site, people actually wanted to link to me!

Who maintains your website and why?

I do most of the coding work myself, with some help from office staff. We use two different hosting companies, for no particular reason. Next year at renewal time, we'll probably consolidate the sites if I can do so without taking a hit in rankings.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

Wow - I never dreamed that I would be able to service not just the 30,000 or so people in my local target market, but also service the entire world! It's true - the Web has opened up a global marketplace where before I was restricted to target customers within a 10 mile radius.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

eCommerce will continue to become more and more a part of the business to consumer world. As search engines become better at filtering results and there is an increased demand on Web masters for quality sites, the Web will continue to improve.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Keep it real. To me, there is no such thing as search engine optimization. SEO can be summarized in one sentence; make sure you construct your page so that a spider can read it. Other than that, all you have to do is provide fresh, unique, relevant content and your site has made-to-order SEO.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Helped! Directories are becoming less a source of traffic and more a source for a human edited link (still important, but for different reasons). Search engines are becoming closer to humans in their ability to decifer what's good content and what's garbage. The better they become at this, the better off I'll be. :)

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Writing lots of good content. It's that simple. The more good content I write and place on my site, the more people come to read it.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

If you e-mail 100 Web masters and ask them for a link to your site, 95 of them won't reply. Three will send you a return "nasty gram." One will say, "Thanks, but no thanks." And one, if you're lucky, will provide a link to you. Asking for links doesn't work. Creating great content that people demand, is the best way to do it.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

I'd like to see faster development of the famed algorithm (is it possible?). As engines get better at mimicking human interpretation, the Web will become a better place. There is still way too much junk on the Web making it hard for real people with real businesses to get listed at the top.

What question do you get asked most?

How can I reduce these wrinkles! Almost every client I have asks this question and there is no easy answer. But if you start with a sound [404 Check: was link to http:/ / www. facial -skincare -product -guide. com/ skincare -regimen. html, anchor: daily skincare regimen] you'll be on your way.

What is your website address?
