Thongs. Flip-flops. Slippers. Whatever name you call this summer footwear, I am pretty sure that you know how common they are nowadays. They are so popular that you just don't see them every summer anymore. These days, people wear them to the malls, the beach, or almost everywhere else at anytime of the year. Nobody's complaining.
Except when the slippers are worn during a visit to the President in the White House. Four years ago, Northwestern University's champion women's lacrosse team paid a visit to then-President George Bush, only for reporters to realize that some of the team members came wearing their favorite footwear.
Most fashion experts agree that this was faux pas. Suze Yalof Schwartz, fashion editor of Glamour magazine, said that flip-flops are excellent footwear to bring with you for casual events. But when it comes to once-in-a-lifetime meetings with the president of the United States, wearing these slippers was done in poor taste. Completely inappropriate, as some people put it. Fortunately, it may have been that the President had not been able to see this incident and carried on with the photo shoot.
A lot have also been considering to wear flip-flop to work. Most experts agree that this should not be recommended. Not only does wearing it show that you are unprofessional. It also has poor foot support, making your feet feel painful after sitting down for 8 hours in the office. For better measure, you can probably sort your footwear and separate them to bins labeled with the day of the week so that you do not forget.
So before you even wear that flip flop, make sure that it is for a casual venue. Flip-flops are good and fashionable, as long as you remember that they were made for the beach and the mall, not the place where you earn your living. Also--never wear it to the White House!
